This study is a reflection about the development of Nursing in Brazil and the aspects related to their empowerment. Secondary sources are the basis of the analysis, whose objective is to highlight the historiographical elements, characterized by the empowerment of Brazilian Nursing during the construction of their professional identity. We emphasize the importance of enlightening about the historiography of Nursing, which is in generous development process in the country, where some strands appear repeatedly in different stages of their development, as well as the process of building the professional identity of Brazilian Nursing. When it is understood that empowerment requires individual competences, democratic participation and collective behavior, the knowledge of the professional trajectory places itself as a valuable tool to leverage new successes that transform the Nursing actuation to society.
