Abstract

Objectives: To identify the frequency of depressive symptoms in postpartum women, as well as the associated factors. Methods: Cross-sectional study conducted with 302 women living in Lavras, MG. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale was used between the 6th and 8th weeks postpartum. Chisquare and logistic regression were used to verify the association between variables. Results: 11.9% of he women presented depressive symptoms. Brown and black women were 3.86 and 6.92 more likely to present depressive symptoms, respectively. Smokers and those who suffered violence before pregnancy were 3.43 and 25.02 more likely to manifest depressive symptoms, respectively. Being in a steady relationship reduced the occurrence of depressive symptoms by 77%; having two previous births and prior history of breastfeeding, for each condition, a decrease in risk of 83%. Conclusion: The frequency of depressive symptoms observed in this study is similar to results presented in other national studies. Black/brown women, smokers and those who have suffered violence should receive special attention for depressive symptoms.
