Author Guidelines

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

HERE accepts manuscripts in the authors' native languages, whether in Portuguese, English, or Spanish, and publishes them in the original language and in English. The abbreviation of the title is Hist Enferm Rev Eletr, which should be used in references, footnotes, and captions.

Manuscript Preparation

Manuscripts will only be accepted for review if they are strictly in accordance with the proposed model for: (statement of responsibility, conflict of interest, and copyright transfer; title page; and main document) and prepared according to the instructions below. Link to the Declaration

Title Page

The title page must contain the following information.

Title of the article: up to 15 words in the manuscript's language. Abbreviations should not be used in titles and subtitles. It is recommended that the title be composed using at least 3 descriptors.

Authorship: full names of the authors. HERE follows the authorship criteria of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. Thus, authors must meet the following criteria:

1. Substantial contributions by the conception of the study AND/OR acquisition, analysis, and/or interpretation of the study data; AND 2. Drafting the manuscript AND/OR critical review of important intellectual content; AND 3. Final approval of the version to be published; AND 4. Agreement to be responsible for all aspects of the study, ensuring that issues related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

Affiliation: must necessarily contain the following information: university (or other institution, if any), city, country, and ORCID iD.

Author contributions: The authors' initials must be inserted in each stage of the study, as exemplified below:

Study conception: ABC, CBA

Data collection: ABC

Data analysis: ABC, CBA

Manuscript writing: ABC, CBA

Critical revision for important intellectual content: ABC, CBA

 

Other types of contributions should be cited in the ACKNOWLEDGMENTS (people who contributed in some way but do not fit the authorship standards) or in FUNDING (Inform the funding institution, type of scholarship or other type of funding, and, if applicable, the funding registration number).

Corresponding author: full name, email address, and photo.

Category of Manuscripts

Original Article: Original and unpublished research developed through the application of scientific investigation methods with an emphasis on the historical approach. This category is limited to 20 pages (excluding the abstract, descriptors, tables, figures, and 70 references) and up to a maximum of six (06) authors. Exceptional cases, with a greater number of authors, will be evaluated by the editorial team, upon justification from the authors. To follow the reporting guideline recommendations in the Enhancing the QUAlity and Transparency Of health Research (EQUATOR) Network is mandatory.

Review Article: Integrative, Systematic, Scoping reviews, and exceptionally, narrative reviews will be accepted. Their length is limited to 20 pages (excluding the abstract, descriptors, tables, figures, and up to 100 references) and up to a maximum of six (06) authors. Exceptional cases will be evaluated by the editorial team, upon justification from the authors. To follow  the reporting guideline recommendations of the Enhancing the QUAlity and Transparency Of health Research (EQUATOR) Network is mandatory.

Biography: Aimed at publishing life stories of both living and deceased individuals. It involves biographical studies of personalities in nursing and health who stand out in ethical, legal, professional, social, and cultural aspects and have made significant contributions to the History of Nursing, Health, and Education. It must follow the guidelines for original articles if derived from a research study. Otherwise, it should be limited to seven (7) pages (including references) and five (5) authors. It can have up to 20 references.

Historical sources/documents/Facsimile: Space for publishing historical sources/documents - either individually or as a set/collection with contributions to the area of the History of Nursing, Health, and Education. This category is limited to 15 pages (including up to 10 references) and four (4) authors.

Experience report: This includes reports that occur behind the scenes of the development of investigations focusing on the History of Nursing, Health, and Education. This category is limited to 15 pages (including up to 50 references) and up to six (6) authors.

Historiographical Debate/Essay: Opinion-based text or analysis of issues that may contribute to the deepening of topics related to the history of Nursing, Health, Care, and Education. The content should be presented in a way that includes an introduction, development of reflection, and conclusion. This category is limited to 15 pages (including references) and five (5) authors. It may have up to 20 references. Exceptional cases will be evaluated by the editorial team upon authors' justification.

Review: A space aimed at engaging the reader with a particular work through a critical analysis of the content and contribution of the book to the History of Nursing, Health, and Education. Reviews must be done on works published within the last 2 years. This category is limited to four (4) pages of analysis and two (2) authors. It is worth noting that in this section, the writing can be free of references, however, if presented, it is limited to five (5) references.

In memoriam: This category is intended to honor a personality In memoriam who has contributed to the field of History of Nursing, Health, and Education, sharing their passage with the academic community. This category is limited to a maximum of five (5) pages, two (2) authors, and up to 15 references.

Letter to the Editor: This category is intended for correspondence addressed to the editor about a manuscript published in the Journal. It is limited to two (2) pages, only one (1) author, and up to four (4) references (if applicable).

Author's Response: This category allows authors to respond to questions from the Letter to the Editor. Responses should be limited to 300 words and can include up to three (3) references. The authorship of the response is exclusively for the principal author.

Editorial: A text about a subject of interest for the historical moment or the production of knowledge with repercussions for the History of Nursing, Health, and Education. It can contain up to two (2) pages, including up to four (4) references, if any. Editorials by invitation from expert authors on a particular topic may be included.

General Rules

The main document must not have author identification. It should be submitted as a Microsoft Office Word file (file extension .doc or .docx), with mandatory page setup in A4 paper size (210x297mm) and 2 cm margins on all sides, Arial font size 12, 1.5 pt line spacing, paragraphs with a first line indent of 1.25 cm (as per template-2).

Abbreviations should not be used in the title and subtitles of the manuscript and in the abstract. For tables and figures with abbreviations, it is mandatory to insert a footnote in the table or figure. In the text, use only standardized abbreviations. In the first citation, the abbreviation is presented in parentheses after the full term.

Italics will be used only to highlight terms or expressions relevant to the study's subject, in words or expressions in a language different from the article's text and in verbatim quotes. In direct quotations from authors: for up to three lines, use quotation marks and insert them in the normal text sequence; in the case of verbatim (respondents' speech), highlight them in a new paragraph without quotation marks. Use Arial font size 11, single line spacing, and 3 cm indent from the left margin. In direct quotations from authors with more than three lines, highlight them in a new paragraph, without quotation marks. Use Arial font size 11, single line spacing, without italics, and 3 cm indent from the left margin.

Author citations in the text must be numbered consecutively and in ascending order, as they are first mentioned in the text, according to the "Vancouver" style. Arabic numbers should be used, in parentheses and superscript, without spaces between the citation number and the previous word, and before the punctuation of the sentence or paragraph [Example: care⁽⁵⁾.]. For sequential citations, the numbers will be separated by a dash, indicating a numerical range [Example: care^(1-4).], For interspersed citations, separated by commas [Example: care^(1,3,5).]. For direct citations, include the cited page number [Example: care^(1:26).].

Footnotes should be limited to a maximum of five. Appendices and attachments will be disregarded.

Tables, charts, and figures, such as photographs, drawings, graphs, among others, must be presented in the body of the manuscript (and cited) and numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals, in the order in which they are inserted in the text, not exceeding the number of five (5). Illustrations should be sent in their original editable files from the source programs or exported as vector files in EPS or PDF formats. For photographs (including the corresponding author's image), the original files should also be saved separately, preferably in TIFF (.tif) format, at a resolution of 300dpi, with good resolution when enlarged. Tables, charts, and figures must have a title. For figures, the title should be located below the figure, while for tables and charts, the title should be located above the table or chart. Tables and charts should be standardized according to the recommendations of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics – IBGE.

Illustrations (figures, photographs, or images) in any category must have high resolution that allows their publication in a size that occupies a quarter of an A4 page.

• Title: as presented on the title page.
• Abstract: limited to 250 words in the manuscript's vernacular language. It should be structured in Objective(s), Method, Results, and Conclusions or Final Considerations. Exceptionally, in the categories In memoriam, Review, and Historical Sources/Documents, the abstract should be limited to 100 words and not structured.
• Descriptors: should be inserted right below the abstract. Include at least five and a maximum of eight (5-8) descriptors in the three languages (Portuguese, English, and Spanish). Descriptors (main term/Main Heading) should be taken from the Health Sciences Descriptors - DeCS (in Portuguese, English, and Spanish) and the Medical Subject Headings - MeSH (exclusively in English).
• References: the list of references should be built according to the Vancouver standards and the titles of the journals should be abbreviated as per the Index Medicus (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nlmcatalog/journals); (more information in Portuguese: norms of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE)).

Article Evaluation Policy

The journal receives contributions on a continuous basis. For any section, only manuscripts submitted through the electronic submission system will be accepted.

The evaluation of manuscripts has two dimensions: administrative and scientific.

In the administrative process, the submitted manuscript is checked by the editorial team for compliance with the standards.

• If negative, the material is returned to the authors for adjustments and the submission is not completed.
• If affirmative, the manuscript moves on to evaluation by the scientific editors, and an analysis process begins to verify if the manuscript meets the journal's scope and the requirements of a scientific production. If negative for any of these items, the manuscript is summarily rejected.

 

Scientific Content: If deemed compliant, the scientific editors delegate the evaluation of the manuscript to ad hoc reviewers to issue an opinion. HERE adopts the double-blind peer review model, which consists of two or more referees designated to review the manuscript anonymously, both for the authors in relation to the reviewers and for the reviewers in relation to the authors.

The opinion based on the evaluation can be: 1- Accepted; 2- Minor corrections; 3- Major corrections; 4- Resubmit; 5- Rejected; and 6- Submit to another journal (does not meet the scope). The opinions issued by the reviewers are evaluated by the associate editors and the Editor-in-Chief, who sends the opinion to the authors. The authors need to meet the deadlines given by the journal, under the risk of having their manuscript filed.

Scientific Integrity, Retraction, and Correction

HERE follows the Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors and the flowcharts of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) (https://publicationethics.org/) to take appropriate editorial actions in cases of plagiarism, self-plagiarism, data fabrication, redundant publication, undisclosed conflicts of interest, and post-publication criticisms that may lead to correction or retraction. Such practices may be identified during the review process or even after publication. Authors must adhere to the standards of good conduct and scientific integrity provided in these guidelines, and ad hoc reviewers are instructed to remain vigilant for possible author misconduct.

HERE requires compliance with the standards set forth in the resolutions of the National Health Council (466/2012, 510/2016, 580/2018, General Data Protection Law (LGPD), Law No. 13.709/2018, Law No. 14.874/2024 governing research with human subjects, and any others that apply) regarding research involving human subjects conducted in Brazil. For research involving human subjects conducted in other countries, HERE requires compliance with the standards provided in the Declaration of Helsinki or equivalent local guidelines.

Conflicts of Interest

All conflicts of interest, if any, must be declared upon manuscript submission and presented on the title page. Potential sources of conflict of interest include, but are not limited to patents, ownership of shares in companies directly or indirectly involved in the research, participation in a board of directors of a company directly or indirectly involved in the research, participation in an advisory board or committee of a company directly or indirectly involved in the research, and consultancy or receipt of lecturer fees from a company directly or indirectly involved in the research. The existence of conflicts of interest does not prevent publication, as long as they are properly declared.

 

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Regarding the ethical use of Generative AI, authors must:

1. Disclose the use and role of AI in the research process;

2. Ensure the ethical, unbiased, and transparent use of AI in the production of the manuscript;

3. Take responsibility for the content generated by Generative AI.

Fee Payment

In the submission and pre-review process of the manuscript, authors must attach proof of payment of the compliance fee. Its value is R$ 100.00 (via PayPal or PagSeguro), and the proof of payment must contain the payer's name and visible payment date. Payments can also be made via PIX: 33.989.468/0001-00 (CNPJ). Manuscripts without proof of this fee payment will not be reviewed. The compliance fee is not refundable if the manuscript is not accepted for publication.

If accepted for publication after review, the authors of the manuscript must pay the editing fee, in the amount of R$ 500.00 (via PayPal or PagSeguro). Payments can also be made via PIX: 33.989.468/0001-00 (CNPJ) or via bank transaction: Associação Brasileira de Enfermagem, CNPJ 33.989.468/0001-00, Banco do Brasil, Agência 0452-9, Conta 220.482-7.

In case of an erratum due to author oversight, a fee of R$ 100.00 must be paid.

Technical Review of Portuguese Language and Translation of Abstracts (English and Spanish), and the Manuscript into English

When the article is accepted, after going through the entire editing process, the author will receive an email from the editorial office (apoio.here@abennacional.org.br) with instructions on:

• Certified translators and reviewers by HERE listed in this document.
• The documents to be sent in the final template (provided only by the office).

The return of the manuscript in the revised and certified versions (and translated, if applicable) as well as proof of payment of the editing fee with the payer's name and visible payment date, must be attached via the OJS system within the requested time frame. Failure to meet this deadline and/or non-compliance with the template (final template sent by the office) will result in the archiving of the manuscript.

At this point, carefully check the submission of the manuscript according to the final template (author names, institution, ORCID, order of authorship, etc.).
