Abstract

A qualitative study with a socio-historical approach, aimed at understanding the historical aspects ,of the educational background of physiotherapy in Brazil, from 1979 to 1992. The data collection process used the method of oral history and documentary analysis. The thematic content analysis, and theoretical framework of Eliot Freidson aroused the categories were found: The influence of Medicine in the educational process of physical therapists; The internship as the principle of the
educational specialist physiotherapist. The body of knowledge of physiotherapy was strongly influenced by Medicine, having as consequences, the formation of the physiotherapist, mainly in the areas of orthopedics and neurology. In contrast, the education aimed at preventing health hazards had been little addressed in the formation of the pioneers in the profession.
